1//CCR: conventions

When first thinking of the idea and concept behind Flair magazine, we knew from the very beginning that we did not want to create a conventional magazine. We, as the people behind flair magazine, are not conventional people, so it would be out of place for us to create a magazine that fits all conventions and norms of other fashion magazines. Because of this we opted for a more unconventional approach to our issues, creating 4, vastly different issues, all challenging conventions in their own way and each person’s personal style.

With a quick look at any of the issues, you can observe that for the cover, flair magazine has a more minimalist look to it. We did this because we agreed as a team, and had similar perspectives on this, that we want our magazine to be more visually based rather than textually based. Meaning that with every issue, we put more value into the photographs rather than the text itself, which is why we decided to create an editorial based magazine.

The cover follows some conventions but also challenges many. Our masthead is large. and placed at the top of the page, this is a very popular convention of all magazines. Furthermore, apart from the title magazines often have pull quotes or pieces of text copied from the article, this is to draw people in and persuade them to buy the magazine. We decided together that we would not use pull quotes as we consider it would take attention away from the impactful images we chose on our cover. For the title of the issue, in other magazines it is usually somewhere small and at the top of the cover. however for the magazine to be more dramatic and impactful, especially since we have no other piece of text on the cover; we decided to place it in the middle lower part of the magazine, in this way it can draw attention to the magazine, and convince people to buy it.

Another way our magazine challenges conventions is through the use of unconventional text types. if you quickly flip through any of the issues, you will find that all 4 issues have some sort of ‘weird’ text. Text placed on paths, duplicated text, etc.
